Hello from Tokyo!
First of all, thank you to all of the people who took my survey. I cannot thank you enough, it truly means a lot. More than ever, I feel very encouraged to keep writing as well. Currently, I am still in the process of sorting out the path forward of the blog (so dramatic), so today, please enjoy this slightly different post...
Japanese English
One thing I enjoy about living in Japan is... the English. For those who are not aware, the English level of Japanese people is horrendous (in a funny way.) And so I would like to share some of it with you today...
From my observation, things written in English are seen as “cool” and have a certain “vibe” to them. In a certain way, there is a level of sophistication if it is written in English.
Obviously, the menu is a translation for English speakers. However, the rest of the photos have English for asthetic, branding, and/or marketing reasons.
on the packaging of a sandwich
and my personal favorite...
This is on the packaging for mix to pickle vegetables. Apparently, it uses “the power of steam.” I am no scientist though, so I cannot verify this. But the best part is the bottom, “OSR 処理” — > The Overheat, steam, roast process.
This is only a small selection of what I experience on a normal basis. Please let me know which one was your favorite and leave a comment!
Ha ha. Thank you for a laugh Sandra. I can’t even begin to imagine what Japanese language on US products would be like! I like the card best : )
They are all funny but I particularly like the sandwich one--it is confusing and I keep reading it to try to understand!
